Sounding Trees

There are different ways to sound a tree. The old-fashioned way is to use a rubber mallet to knock on a tree and judge how hollow it sounds. A second way is to take a core sample, to bore into the tree and get a cross-section of the wood straight across. That tells us a lot, most notably the condition of the heartwood of the tree. The most expensive way to sound a tree is by resistograph, which is a very, very expensive piece of equipment that produces something like a sonogram does for human tissue.

If there is some aversion, if there is a desperate need to know the actual cross-section of a tree, someone really wants to know how far decayed a tree is, a resistograph would be the best tool. A heritage tree with some real value in terms of what it does for a property might be a likely candidate. Of course, since trees aren't covered by health insurance, a resistograph is only occasionally used.
