Tulip Poplar Removals at Washington Golf and Country Club in Arlington, VA
Pro Arbor has been contracted to remove some large Tulip Poplar trees from the Washington Golf and Country Club in Arlington, VA. The health of the trees has been deteriorating for years and now is to the point where leaving them in place could be hazardous to golfers and possibly neighbors of the course in the beautiful and prestigious North Arlington neighborhood. Work commenced two days ago and, for the most part, went quite well. A total of eight trees are being removed.
The original plan was to use manual rigging techniques – climbers in the trees and friction/gravity driven rigging systems to lower pieces of the trees after cutting. However, a Pro Arbor climber discovered damage to one of the trees incurred by a previous lightning strike. The damage is extensive enough to render the manual method of removal unsafe. The stress applied to the wood by the rigging in this kind of operation could provoke a stem failure in the tree. This would have disastrous consequences to the workers and to the valuable Arlington property surrounding the trees. Another plan for this tree’s removal must be made.
The damage to the wood from the lightning strike is pictured below. It is located about 45 feet high on the tree. Lightning struck trees can be especially dangerous to work on because of what the strike does to the wood. The lightning flash-boils the sap in the tree and delaminates the lignin. This sometimes leaves the wood in a very weak and brittle state, unable to take force without breaking.
With this kind of weakness in the main stem of the tree, another plan will have to be made and executed for the removal. Most likely, a crane will be employed for this project, since that will allow for safe lowering of the pieces. Pro Arbor is proud to serve the Washington Golf and Country Club as well as their neighbors in surrounding Arlington, Virginia.
