I was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada, to American parents who raised me in central Pennsylvania. I went to high school at Central High School in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. I went to undergraduate school at Juniata College in Huntington, Pennsylvania, where I earned a Bachelors Degree in Psychology with minors in Philosophy and Religion. Juniata is a small, private, liberal arts college.
From there I was a psychotherapist for children for years after that, before going to graduate school for school counseling. I became a high school guidance counselor. That phase of my life and career ended when I left school counseling in 2002 and went into construction.
I was a construction supervisor for a few years (underground utility construction), and at that point started to work in tending trees, kind of as a side venture. I decided quickly that I really enjoyed tree trimming. So, I purchased my own tools and some small equipment and decided to 'hang a shingle,' so to speak, or get my business license in 2004, which was the official founding of Pro Arbor in April of 2004.
I continued to work as an owner/operator, one man show on small tree removals and tree trimming, but no chemical applications or plant health care because I wasn't qualified for that. Around 2007, I decided to take the company to another level and begin to hire certified arborists. That is when my experience and training with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) happened.
From that point, Pro Arbor shifted into a new, higher tier of service. We adopted all of the practices of the ISA. We hired more certified arborists in all phases of tree service, not just sales but consulting and operations. Since then, we have continued to educate and train all of our personnel in proper farmaculture techniques as dictated by the ISA, TCIA (which we really turn to for our safety protocols) and ANSI, the American National Standards Institute.
We chose to use trained arborists for everything based on my view of the industry. I became almost a little bit embarrassed for the industry, because of the lack of professionalism, training, and credentials amongst my peers. It became more and more important to me to make sure that as a professional tree care provider, I was being responsible with the delivery of my service. And, to do that, it's very important to put forth certified individuals who have the resources to provide that level of service.
I think that we just expect that by virtue of being paid to provide a service, that an individual or organization is "professional". I'm afraid that sometimes that word or consideration is too easily granted to a provider. That is especially true in tree care. I think there is just too much delivery of service without the credentials and expertise to back it. Because of that, it's been Pro Arbor's mission to counter that in the industry. We've tried extra hard to provide nothing short of the highest level of training and expertise in all facets of our service delivery.
I would rank your company right at the top, compared to our peers in the industry. I'm sure that this is said a lot by owners of service providing companies, but ours truly is. I have the credentials, expertise, and history to back this up. We're second to none in the industry because of our commitment to provide the highest trained and the highest level of professionals to the cast, no matter what that will cost us. If I were to give an example, it doesn't always require a surgeon to cure an ailment, but we put that level of expertise into every task. The reason is we don't want to underserve.
