Ask Ferris: Tree Was Removed Last Summer
Dear Ferris,
A large Maple was removed after last summer's storm, and the stump was ground. What can be done to the area where the tree stood? There are still large roots at the surface of the soil. It looks unsightly and would like advise on what to do to amend the soil, and can anything be planted this spring. Should we wait a few seasons before we plant another type of tree? Pro Arbor did a great job removing the tree. Suggestions please!

When stump grinding is performed, there is a large amount of wood shavings left in the space where the stump was. Because of the rapid decomposition of this wood debris, it can leave the area unhospitable to plant life for a season or two if it is not removed. If you want to grow turf, then all of the debris should be removed and replaced with soil. If you are planting a tree, then this material can be used as the mulch layer after you install the tree.
